This is not just any average run-of-the-mill sports award. The America’s Cup trophy is the oldest trophy for international competition in any sport. To compare, the America’s Cup predates The Ashes trophy for Cricket, The Stanley Cup for Hockey, and it even predates the modern Olympics.

So just what does this unique and iconic Cup look like? The America’s Cup trophy is a stunningly ornate ewer, one of a handful of off-the-shelf trophies crafted in 1848 London by the world’s oldest jeweler, Garrard & Company. Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, bought one of the trophies and donated it as the prize for the winner in 1851 for the Royal Yacht Squadron’s regatta around the Isle of Wight. Made of striking sterling silver and weighing in at 35 pounds, its original height was 27 inches but has had its base extended twice for engravings. It was originally known as the “Royal Yacht Squadron’s £100 Cup”, meaning the cup had a value of hundred British pounds. Today, the trophy is officially named the “America’s Cup” after the name of the first yacht to win it.

The Cup resided in an alcove at the NYYC’s club house in New York until 1983. That year, Australia 11 won the America’s Cup, and the trophy was transported by a Brinks armored truck to our own Marble House on Bellevue Ave where Dyer Jones gave a dignified presentation to mark the end of the longest winning streak in all of sport’s history. Tragedy struck the Cup in March of 1997 inside the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s clubhouse in Westhaven, Auckland, when Benjamin Peri Nathan used a sledgehammer to smash and batter the Cup. It was returned to Garrard & Co. for repair, which took three months.

In the years around the original making of the Cup, Garrard produced several other ewers in the exact same style and size as the America’s Cup. However, the America’s Cup is truly the only one of its kind.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone, on your Mobile Architects Inn

Location:Newport

Americas Cup Returns

NEWPORT, R.I. – Whether it’s getting an up-close look at the oldest trophy in international sport, savoring a parade of majestic racing yachts, attending lunch with some of the top names in sailing or viewing a presentation by the winning America’s Cup team at historic Fort Adams, visitors are guaranteed an unforgettable experience in Newport this week.

BMW ORACLE Racing, winner in February of the 33rd America’s Cup, will return to Newport on Thursday, July 1 as part of its U.S. victory tour. Wednesday, Sail Newport executive director Brad Read revealed new details on what visitors to the city can expect during the July 1 visit.

In addition to a previously announced luncheon at Fort Adams, Read said that the planning committee is in the process of planning a harbor parade, as well as a public viewing at Bannister’s Wharf.
<br In keeping with that theme, the Cup’s newly unveiled website prominently features as part of its homepage the word “Tradition” overlayed against a series of images of past Cup races, that happened to have been sailed when the Cup was based in Newport.

Whether organizers care to admit it, for many sailing purists, this coincidence speaks volumes. If the team from BMW/Oracle Racing and its head software billionaire Larry Ellison, are serious about recapturing the imagination of the sporting community, then there can be no other choice but to bring the Cup back to the grounds where those iconic images now online were taken.

Ellison, who recently purchased the Astors’ Beechwood must know somewhere deep down that the Cup is bigger than any one city or host community. Some would even say it’s too big for Newport. But Newport’s legacy, sailing heritage and naturally superior conditions, are just what the Cup needs.

For the benefit of the sport, the choice of venue for the next Cup match must return the race to its roots.

From the outset, it appears that to their credit, the Defender is doing just that. Already, Ellison has made it a point to craft a new set of design rules that will create closer racing with boats that rely more on teamwork than technology; there’s a move afoot to re-launch a challenger series which would effectively take Cup competition to ports of call around the world; and the desire to see a world-class Cup Village developed to serve as a home base for syndicates and fans, would go a long way to galvanizing the spirit of open competition and accessibility.

But even with all of those nods to the past, how fervently can one claim to be committed to reviving the series if Newport – which played host to the glory days and whose conditions are a sailor’s dream – doesn’t play a part in the competition?

Ellison has made his fortune. Let’s hope that the state gives him reason to leave a lasting legacy: The man who brought the Cup back where it belongs.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone, on your Mobile Architects Inn

12 Meter Sailing

The days are getting longer and the air warmer. 12 Meter Charters is ready to spring into sailing season! Complimentary refreshments, with a focus on local foods, will be served.

HOME is a remarkable achievement in filmmaking that captures the Earth's most amazing landscapes in a new and astonishing light, showcasing its incomparable beauty and acknowledging its vulnerability to change. To make this film, award winning aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand travelled around the planet over 18 months filming over 50 countries from the air. This movie has a mission and carries a message for humanity: "to become aware of its spoliation of the Earth’s riches and change its patterns of consumption."

The schedule for this special Earth Day event is as follows:

6:30pm - Welcoming Reception
7:00pm - Start of the Movie HOME

Please RSVP to Courtney Huth at chuth@ailt.org or 401.849.2799 x 19

Also this week, as part of the Land Trust's Land Matters Walk & Talk Series, help us celebrate our 20th anniversary as we tour the very first property conserved by the Aquidneck Land Trust. The landscaping on this historic property was designed by the firm of Frederick Law Olmstead. We will stroll the property's winding paths and expansive lawns bordered by tulip trees, beeches, maples and butternuts, as we will learn the history behind this gorgeous, historic parcel.

This free tour will be led by Tim Brown of T. J. Brown Landscaping. Plan to meet at 9 am, Saturday April 24th, at 459 Bellevue Avenue in Newport.
Please RSVP to Courtney Huth at chuth@ailt.org or 401.849.2799 x 19.

ALT's mission is to preserve Aquidneck Island's open spaces and natural character for the lasting benefit of our community. ALT has conserved 2,290.57 +/- acres on Aquidneck Island. ALT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. It was a fundraiser held at the Hi-Hat. The Jazz and Blues club is this years sponsor for all major Pride Events. (I was just there for the Miss Gay Rhode Island Pagaent.)

Miss Coco Peru, aka Clinton Leupp, is a gay American actor and drag performer, perhaps best known for his role in the 1999 independent film Trick. Peru also starred in Richard Day's Girls Will Be Girls (2003), was one of six performers featured in the Logo original stand-up comedy series Wisecrack (2005), and had a cameo appearance in the 1995 comedy film To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. He has appeared in a number of other supporting and guest-starring roles in film and television, including Will & Grace, the Bravo reality series Boy Meets Boy, and the comedy Straight-Jacket (as the secretly lesbian wife of S.R.O. studio's head).

So the Newport crowd bought one big VIP table so that we can enjoy the show in style. Not to spoil the surprise of what her show is about, I'll skip to the end....laughter and more rave applause.

After the show, I pulled her aside and got a picture taken with her. I've also heard of her show going to Manchester and Boston next. She is worth seeing.

I was surprised talking to her after the show. She is quite quiet and humble. She is almost bashful. I saw Coco Peru later at the bar, Stable, which is Michael Slade's new cowboy bar. Though that night there was probably more princess ponies in stable, if you understand me. Coco never did an after speech or try to be in the limelight at all. I really respect that for such a big performer as she is.

The Newport gang finished the night with dancing, karaoke and a safe drive back over seas to our sweet home on the island.

Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone, on your Mobile Architects Inn

Location:Providence RI

'April eNews: Rough Point Opens, Whitehorne Adds Furniture, New NRF Trustee'

'April eNews: Rough Point Opens, Whitehorne Adds Furniture, New NRF Trustee'

Fort Adams News

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Fort Adams Trust, the keepers of Fort Adams is inviting the public to a workshop on the future of the fort to be held on Monday, April 19, from 7 – 9 p.m. at the auditorium of the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) Newport campus.

The public workshop is part of a master planning process now underway funded in part by a federal Preserve America grant. It’s the first time the Auld Mug has been in New Zealand since 2003, when it was lost to Swiss syndicate, and now former Cup defender, Alinghi.

Oracle beat Alinghi 2-0 in a best-of-three series off Valencia, Spain in February and could defend the America’s Cup as early as 2013. Newport is also scheduled to be paid a visit by the Auld Mug sometime in the near future. Oracle syndicate head Larry Ellison has said that Newport is one of three cities being considered to host the next Cup.

Speaking of Ellison, CNN Money has a good piece up today touching on the software tycoon’s desire to bring the romance back to the embattled series. Obviously, to purists, that means nothing less than returning the race home to where it experienced its glory days: and that’s right here in Newport.

Bring Back The Cup.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone, on your Mobile Architects Inn

Location:Newport RI

St Patrick's Day

Newport's St Patty Day celebrations continue throughout the month. Last night was another great night in Newport. Bars and pubs were busting from the seams as hundreds of bar crawling Irish in green shirts paraded through town.

This is once again another perfect reason to stay with us. I don't know how anyone staying on any of the major streets go any sleep last night. The shouting and ruckus was unbearable. Stay at the quiet neighborhoods of Architects Inn or Inn Bliss, where you can walk to the fun but leave it when you are done.

Here's an article from the Newport Now:

NEWPORT, R.I. – Have you ever noticed Newport is surrounded by green? Sure, we’re on an island encapsulated by the blue of the ocean, but driving around this fine St. Patrick’s Day morning while delivering this week’s edition of Newport This Week, it was hard not to see green… Everywhere.

From the trim on countless historic buildings, to the awnings of the Travers Block; even the patina of the copper entry way to Ida Lewis, I couldn’t stop seeing green.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone, on your Mobile Architects Inn

Location:Newport RI

RI Home Show

I had such a good time at the home show. He deftly handled the "political realm" by convincing Congress to keep his army supplied, a tough task when the country was really just a loose confederation of states with no power to tax. His offenses were as brilliant as they were unpredictable, such as his legendary Christmas Day strike at Trenton, and a bold foray through the fog to nearly drive the British from the field at Germantown. It was an aggressive attack that helped convince the French that the American Army was worth supporting. Carbone argues that it is this sort of fearless but not reckless offensive that Washington should be remembered for - as a leader not of infallibility but of greatness.

The Irish Country House

Back by popular demand after a standing-room-only screening last year. Join us Thursday, March 18 at 6:00 p.m. for a film screening of The Irish Country House.

Magnificent, intriguing, cherished or forlorn, the fortunes of the Irish Country House offer a unique insight into Ireland's history. Shot at over 40 locations across Ireland, this film celebrates the Irish Country House heritage and charts its development, from the earliest cliff-top castles and fortified houses to the great Palladian mansions, giving an unparalleled view of one of Europe's richest architectural assets. These remarkable buildings in their idyllic landscape settings are a vital part of Ireland's historical and artistic heritage, with their magic and mystery vividly evoked in this beautiful film. The Irish Country House is narrated by Anjelica Huston, who spent her own childhood in a country house in the west of Ireland.

Verses for a Birthday by Thomas Wentworth Higginson. They are partnered with the prestigious Brown University theater department which gives them a steady stream of extremely talented actors.

The last time I went, I saw 'A Christmas Carol'. This is an annual trek for most Rhode Islanders. We all saw it every year growing up. If our parents didn't take us, the school department would organize a field trip. Trinity changes it every year so everyone is sure to see the latest techniques for the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. One year it was a tall dark sinister man; another year it was a cloaked being; and another it was simply a shadow that loomed over the audience as if saying it could be in all our destinies.

The latest was Shakespeares 'Twelfth Night'. I have seen Shakespeare in the park in Newport and other performances at various theaters in Providence but this one takes the cake. Music, dancing, and personality really brought the story to life. They change the setting to Victorian era making that more interesting. The costumes were perfect. Unlike most other productions where the actors ramble off prose so quickly, one might as well be trying to decifer the Rosetta Stone, Trinity's actors spoke slowly and hit the punchline on every joke and pun. The audience never missed a beat. It was marvelous. Hilarious and romantic, Twelfth Night is the perfect Valentines Day play.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Location:Providence

News on Tennis
Sam Querrey, currently the No. 3 American and No. 22 ranked player in the world, has committed to compete in the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, which will be held July 5 - 11, 2010 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. It is mildly cold with a whispy wind blowing from the north and I get a phone call from my dear friends Paul and Mark. "We are going to Fluke for a game dinner. Want to come?"
I think about it for a whole jiffy and reply "Heck yeah!!! I've got my coat on already!"

We park for free on Thames Street (though we could have got closer) and headed straight into the windy wharves with scarves and long coats. As we approach Fluke I catch a glimpse of a man by Clark Cooke House, but pay no mind because I was anxious to get in the warm restaurant. And boy was it warm. The owners greeted us at the door. So gracious and full of xena, I felt like I was in their private home. Candles were lit on the tables, which were nice pulled apart so we never felt like eavesdropers on anyone else. Very romantic indeed. The menu was a prefixe.

Course 1 Wild Boar over Housemade Papparadelle paired with Gloria's "Old Vines" Dry Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Course 2 Pan Roasted Guinea Fowl with Roasted Mushrooms Fregula Pasta with Crispy Serano paired with Gloria's "Old Vines" Dry Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Course 3 Cervena Venison with Celeriac Puree, Brussel Sprouts, Juniper & Rosemary Reduction paired with Gloria's "Old Vines" Dry Creek Mendocino Zinfandel 2006

Course 4 Milk Chocolate Pudding with Hazelnut Praline paired with Chateau Tomar du Hoyat Sauternes 2005

Wine was chosen by John Callaghan from Bellevue Wine and Spirits so of course it was fabulous. And as it so happened John was sitting at the table next to us. How fun!!

The food was to die for! Every course better than the last. It was so beautifully presented too. As we were eating, I glanced out the window at that man by Clark Cooke that I so quickly overlooked...he was a street musican playing his saxophone. Perfect view from our table, I felt he was playing just for us. That's the cherry on the cake.

Afterwards the hosts, Jeff and Geremie, came and chatted with us for quite some time. Again feeling like guests in their home...superb attention. Geremie clued us in on their once a month dinner and chef demonstrations. We are sooooo there next time!!

We left warm and full of delicious delights. The cold wind could not bother us after a dinner like that!

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Location:Newport RI

Americas Cup

Here is a great article from the official site of the 33rd Americas Cup; however, people are asking, "Will the Cup come back to Newport?" Especially since Ellison just purchased the historic Mrs Astor's mansion on Bellevue Ave, Beechwood...

BMW ORACLE Racing Team’s revolutionary wing sail powered trimaran USA convincingly won Race 2 off Valencia today to win the 33rd America’s Cup match outright.
The American team, founded ten years ago by software mogul Larry Ellison, achieved its ultimate goal when they powered across the finish line of Race 2 with a margin of 5 minutes and 26 seconds to defeat the Swiss Defender’s Alinghi 2-0.

Ellison sailed on board USA today, his first America’s Cup Match race proving a winning one.

BMW ORACLE Racing become the first American team to win the America’s Cup since 1992 when America3 defeated Il Moro de Venezia off San Diego.

San Francisco’s Golden Gate Yacht Club become the 28th American Defender of the America’s Cup.

Russell Coutts, CEO of BMW ORACLE Racing, has now won the America’s Cup four times, twice with his native New Zealand, once at the helm of the Swiss Alinghi team and now masterminding the success of Ellison’s American team.

In the evening twilight the giant black and white trimaran USA speared across the finish line off Valencia, a long way ahead of the Swiss team who first won the America’s Cup in New Zealand in 2000 and then successfully defended it against Emirates Team New Zealand in July 2007.

After a delay of over six hours waiting for the SE’ly wind to settle, Race 2 of the best of three series was contested in around 6-9 knots of breeze.

The showdown immediately unfolded in dramatic fashion when Alinghi were penalised for an error in the start box, the second successive penalty during the Pre-Start sequence. USA lead off the start line by 23 seconds but the Swiss team hooked into extra wind pressure on the right side of the course and a favourable 20 degrees shift in wind direction.

They profited progressively and at one stage were some 600 metres ahead of the BMW ORACLE Racing Team’s trimaran.

Unlike Friday’s whitewash, when USA sailed steadily away from Alinghi 5, the windward leg was nailbiting right until the American trimaran was able to round the first mark with a small lead.

On the approach to the windward mark of the 39 miles triangle shaped course, USA came back when they were able to squeeze inside the line of Alinghi, to turn 27 seconds ahead. Surging to 30 knots at times on the first of two 13 miles reaches, the powerful trimaran with its 223ft high solid wing sail rig was able to gain 2 minutes and 23 seconds by the second turning mark, the gybe, going on to win by 5 minutes and 29 seconds.

Valentine’s Day sees bright sunshine and light winds this morning around the Marina Real Juan Carlos 1, the beating heart of the 33rd America’s Cup.
The forecast looks fairly promising for Race 2 which is due to start around midday, although the race committee do plan to wait until the forecasted SE’ly breeze arrives and won’t be hurried. In many respects it is a similar situation to Friday Race 1 where the offshore breeze is due to give way a breeze from the southerly quadrant.

Alinghi 5 docked out first with Swiss timing at 0900hrs to their signature Red Hot Chili Peppers ‘Can’t Stop’. If this proves to be their last day as America’s Cup holders, team president Ernesto Bertarelli (SUI) wore a huge smile and looked relaxed as he stepped on board. They have the advantage of entry with right of way on starboard tack today and may try for revenge in the start box, and aim to pin a penalty of USA.

BMW ORACLE Racing’s USA crew looked equally relaxed and focussed. They left their base knowing they can make sailing history today. The triangle course is more of a challenge in terms of manoeuvres, boat handling and sailing on the tight reaches. But, once more we are heading into unknown territory. Some say Alinghi will be stronger around the reaching course, but others simply point to the extra righting moment of USA and the power to drag ratio of their wing weapon.

It could be a red letter day for Russell Coutts (NZL) the CEO of BMW ORACLE Racing. In 1995 he skippered Black Magic to win the America’s Cup for New Zealand 5-0 against Dennis Conner’s Young America Team and in 1993 he skippered Alinghi to win the America’s Cup 5-0 for Switzerland. In

Race officer Harold Bennett (NZL) said this morning:

“ We are going out for looking to midday but I am not sure we will see the breeze by then, and we have to wait for this offshore breeze to die away and for the wind to turn into the SE, it is going to be in that quadrant, southerly or SE. So we have to wait and see until it develops.”- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Location:Newport RI

At Salvation Cafe Again

My new local hang out is closing for the next month but not without a nice farewell from it's loyal patronage. (I'm not a fan but each to their own.) I needed to find someplace fun and funky but also near the theater.

I remembered the Providence Journal review of CAV as being a great before theater restaurant so off to CAV we went.

The decor was out if this world. Crystal chandiliers everywhere with funky chairs and tables with fabric and flowers. The low glow of the restaurant made you think it was all candlelit. The owner is Egyptian and French but also a little Italian. She did a great job infusing all the elements in her restaurant. One chefs is Phillipino but trained in France and the other is Italian. The food had a very Middle Eastern flare to it. Beautiful decorated and even better was the taste. The owner was so sweet and nice to have come to our table to meet us. She liked me so much, she gifted me a religious pendant which is customary where she is from. I will definitely be back.

Get this... It's as if I'm a diarama in a snow-globe. As I look out at the world, the world is looking back in at me. I hear the faint sound of a ring. It's the doorbell...

Today, the Architect's Inn witnessed the union of Michael and Jessica. Two wonderful people are now husband and wife for the first time. They have their family around them, snapping pictures like they were two movie stars as they pose in a Victorian wingback chair. They will retire to their room (Belmont Room) for now but they will emerge, just as they have for the past 7 years, but this time bound by a ring.

This will leave tomorrow after celebrating the New Year in Newport, RI. The snow-clad streets and gas lamps on Bellevue Ave will be just a memory. Their plans are to meander down Ocean Drive to see the great mansions standing proud on their respective hills. Their columns of marble resembele the white blanket at their feet-now undisturbed until the spring. As they ride along the winding road, being careful not to slide into the New England stone walls, they can't help but wonder what's around the next curve. "There's Brenton Point!" she'll exclaim; a place they remember from the summer as being full with kites and explorers. "There is Castle Hill and the Swiss Village!" All are still and quiet on their adventure in the snow. Homeward bound they go into the west and over the Newport Bridge. The journey doesn't end in Newport...but it does return. Jessica, Michael and their new combined family now share a memory of a cherished moment at the Architect's Inn. Cometh back they will to create new memories of the season...new experiences to share...a new journey starting all over again.

Wonderful Story from Newport Daily News

WHEN MOTHER unwrapped the Advent calendar and set it up in the living room on top of the radiator cover, winter had arrived and the countdown to Christmas began.

You opened a new window on the calendar each day, folding back the thin cardboard shutters to reveal a biblical scene leading up to the birth of Christ — unless your older brother had snuck in a photo of a naked woman.

The first snows came in December, and the weather turned genuinely cold. We would go ice-skating at night at the Sachuest Skating Club, which used the outdoor rink at St. George's School, high on the hill overlooking Second Beach. Many nights it was bitterly cold, but that never stopped us. We skated around and around to the music under the lights, and then clump-clump-clumped into the hot house when our feet got numb. I remember the silhouettes of giant pine trees, and the air, sweet and salty at the same time.

I fell in love with Mallory Barber at the rink. She was older than I by a couple of years. Like a dog, I trailed her around at what I thought was a safe distance. One night, she skated over to me and said, "You know, I don't love you." Then she added, "The truth hurts, doesn't it?"

It was a time to experiment with new words and urges. Like your clothes when you're 11, life was either too big or too small. We took drives at night to see the lights and the decorations. Ranch houses usually had the most gaudy displays, with plastic junk all over the lawn and Santa and his reindeers streaming cockeyed across the roof. The proud Victorians on upper Kay Street and around Touro Park had the most tasteful displays, a simple but lush wreath or garlands and strings of single-color lights, usually white.

"Very elegant," my mother would say. We, of course, had chubby multi-color lights. What self-respecting kid wants all white lights — unless he's destined to work for Martha, or do window displays at Tiffany's?

The mansions along Bellevue Avenue and Ocean Drive were dark. Most were still intact and owned by the rich, who had gone away for the winter. Christmas was for regular folk: Leona Helmsley's "little people," who did their own taxes and even paid them, and bought Christmas trees that weren't perfect.

The Newport Bridge wasn't lit up, because — ta da! — there was no bridge. The bridges and deck railings of the destroyers and tenders at the Naval Base piers were strung with lights. Before its exit, the Navy fleet sustained Newport. There was no need for a bridge and tourists, if there ever was.

"Only" ferry service existed between Newport and Jamestown, which "only" saved the town from the rapacious Connecticuters and New Yorkers and New Jerseyites, who, having to loop around Providence, found it easier to keep on going and trample Cape Cod instead.

Best was downtown. Thames Street, the whole stretch from Washington Square to the bottom of the Fifth Ward, was a one-way, narrow cobblestone street, bounded on both sides by old wooden buildings. The scar that today is called America's Cup Avenue was not even a nightmare yet. Edward's Sporting Goods, where I bought all of my baseball gloves and bats, was on Thames. Ed Goldberg was a nice Jewish man who I doubt held anything against Christmas, as was my pediatrician, Dr. Abramson. I loved these men. They treated me like a son.

Lights were strung above Thames Street, and driving beneath them with the tires rumbling on the cobble stones and the heater cranking and the smell of wool filling the car, you felt triumphant, like de Gaulle or Eisenhower. Maybe this was what it felt like to go to Disneyland, in Anaheim, Calif.

Thames Street had a W.T. Grant's and a Woolworth's. I went in with my mother and wandered around or sat at the fountain while she looked at dress patterns and bought sewing supplies. We bought "white bark" at the Fanny Farmer store that made its own chocolate. White chocolate in a white bag — very elegant.

Around the corner, on Spring Street at Ward's Printers, we picked out Christmas cards. The Wards lived up the street from us, on Whitwell Avenue, in a little Cape Cod house even smaller than ours. Everybody then lived in small houses, except for the doctors and lawyers and the rich who had repaired to Palm Beach or Chamonix.

Christmas Day would finally arrive. The living room was stacked with presents, most of them soon forgotten. But every year we received one or two things we really wanted. The bike. The microscope. The home pinball machine out of the Sears catalog! We never got everything we wanted, but always enough. There were disappointments, but you survived.

Truthfully, the best part of Christmas was after Christmas. As the trees were discarded, my brother and I and our friends would scour the streets and drag them back to the field behind our house and pile them high. On the designated night, everyone from the neighborhood would gather and my father would ignite them, and we stood in a circle and watched the bonfire.

Your feet were cold standing in the frozen snow, and your face was hot. People on the other side of the fire miraged.

You wondered if your eyebrows were getting singed and stepped back a foot. You saw your father smiling, and glimpsed what he looked like as a boy. Nobody could imagine that one day this whole field would be nothing but solid houses. We, the regular people, were just living our lives. . . never did anything to her. . . . wondering why Mallory Barber didn't love you . . . tinsel . . In the summer, you would pick blackberries from this field, and build forts. But tonight you just stood there and looked into the fire, noticing an ornament someone had forgotten to remove .

Rhdoe Islanders are wicked excited about Wicked!!!

Wicked is plaingd at Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC) for the next couple weeks. We went on Wednesday this past week and I have to say, the performance beats New York!

I mean, PPAC alone is worth the admission cost as it is a gorgeous turn of the century restored theater in the center of Rhode Island's capital city. The detail of the moldings and guilding in this theater will blow you away. The seats are numerous and spacious! We always get orchestra seating but any seat is great. The stage is much larger than a New York stage and many times it is the same cast that happened to go on tour. The price ranges between $40-$88/ticket. Amazing value!

The music of Wicked is addicting. The first time you see it, you may not really absorb it because there is so much you are trying to take in. The second time, you can relax and really little to the the wonderful voices singing 'Defying Gravity' and 'For Good'...some of the show stopping songs.

The Architect's Inn are sponsors so we can get our guests tickets before they go on sale to the general public. Just one of many perks of staying with us.

This Little Town Blizzard

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 386px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7Via__OIt0A/Sy8A8HNtAPI/AAAAAAAAAXE/LRGq4--QVLw/s400/Winter+Ocean+Drive.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5417549909478670578" />
Newport had its first snow for the season. It sometimes comes early like this but this little town was ready. Newport rarely gets a big snow storm so all of my friends get so excited that we organize a Snow Storm Party. It was perfect that it happened to coincide with a Holiday Party as well on the Top of the Hill.

The party began as most do with cordial introductions and chit chat. Everyone caught up on the going ons in Newport from the local housekeeper gossip from Ocean Drive holiday parties the night before to the historic signifigance debates over the downtown center. What people were not whispering was the anxiousness over the coming storm. By this point, the storm was 4 hours late!!! But Mother Nature is on her own holiday time.

Around 8 pm the snow began to fall. Now the falsettos began and the screams and giggling began. Soon the people (grown adults) were in teh snow making snow angels. The party grew to telling stories of childhood Christmas long ago... Stories so poetic and profound that you could hear the hum of the crystal wine glasses.

Later in the night, some even drove around in the snow looking at the quaint Newport cottages decorated in holiday lights. We drove on Ocean Drive to the empty houses of the Newport's High Society...wondering what warm resort town they must reside in on Christmas.

The next day, Newporters gather at Fort Adams for a little snow sledding and snowball tossing. Even more people drive around town to see the powdery snow frosting the Colonial homes in this early American city by the sea. Timeless...

Beethoven in Newport

Last night, the Jane Pickens Theater played a film named 'In Search of Beethoven'. This biography follows the life of Ludwig von Beethoven, the famous composer known the world round. Starting out in childhood up until his death, the film not only was an excellent account of his life and love affairs, but of his art transformation within the man. At this, I'll stop as this is a movie you should see to truely appreciate.

The reason why I loved it was it was at the Jane Pickens Theater (a lovely old theater that sits in the town square of Newport that is gushing with charm) as well as it was a fubdraiser for the Newport Music Festival led by (uncle) Mark and Joanie Malkovich.

If you have never been to the Newport Music Festival, you really must mark your calendars now. Imagine yourself sitting in a mansion ballroom. You are wearing your fine summer outfit (You know the one you slip on once a year and when you do, you think, "Why don't it wear this more often?"). The ballroom is decorated with real, red roses. A stage, as the focal point in the center, quite literally just several feet in front of you and your signifigant other. To your right, 17 foot doorways that open to a cascade of green grass the plummets into the ocean at Cliff Walk. You are rubbing elbows with the most fascinating people you'll meet all social season, but you don't know it because, right now, you and they are there to witness an historic event of musical proportions. (Do you feel like a Victorian yet?)

A door opens. Everyone holds their breath. Out steps a world talent, quietly stepping on stage without a single word. And then the musical experience begins unmatched by any other Classical performance you've ever heard or seen. Experience the music as it was supposed to be heard- in small intimate settings in private homes and mansions. Listen to Classical masterpieces from Mozart and Beethoven but also from many lesser known composers, whose works have been long lost or overshadowed by more mainstream artists. The muscians are hand picked by Mark every year from far away lands and invited to the center of society, Newport, for three weeks in July where they perform up to four concerts a day, everyday. Joanie, who is the most gentle woman on Earth, manages the event but also takes care of the musicans from breakfast and dinner to late night practice in her livingroom. (Absolutely she is the backbone in this international project.)

Ahhh, I digress! But you will see how easy it is to get swept away by this amazing event. We host a muscian every year. Who knows who you will be eating breakfast with at the Architects Inn!

Thanks for listening.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Location:Jane Pickens, Newport RI

Franklin Spa is

Franklin Spa is this great diner down the street from the Architect's Inn.
